Not all dogs are created equal. That is the reason why our dogs don't all carry the same price tag. Here are some things you need to know:

As a long time Registered Breeder, Judge and Senior Appraiser for SABBS I have experience in the selection of good quality dogs in terms of conformation and character. In any litter there are puppies that are perfect for being family pets and perhaps some that turn out to be suitable for breeding. 

Once the puppies are 6 weeks old I will be able to make my first selection, keeping the best or most promising breeding candidates for myself and selling the obvious PET quality puppies first. As they grow and change with age I will select the best again from what is left and advertise the rest. This is done until they reach breeding age at 12 to 18 months old. To ensure I only breed the puppies that are best suited to improving my breeding stock according to my breeding plan I need to keep many puppies from a litter and carefully re-asses them at regular intervals. Judging them critically to see who amongst them will make the cut to breed. Only the best ones are bred. This is to protect the integrity of our breed and to ensure success in our breeding program. Please note that are sold earliest have to carry the cost of raising the rest until a later stage where more accurate breeding decisions can be made, therefore please don't ask for a discount.

There's a distinct difference between a true breeder and a "Puppy Printer" or "Backyard Breeder".

The Puppy Printer  is a person who owns a male and female dog and has them produce puppies on a regular basis by mating them together over and over. This produces puppies that carry the same genetic faults as the mother and father, litter after litter, after consecutive litter. The owner does not factor in the cost of feeding the mother and father, nor does the owner factor in the veterinary or housing costs for the dogs he owns as he would have paid these costs anyway if they were only kept as his pets. The owner usually isn't very knowledgeable about the breed. In most cases has no breeding plan or breed-genetic directive, flooding the market with multiple copies of the same genes that effectively narrows the gene pool, impacting negatively on overall breed health and diversity. This owner usually sells his puppies as unregistered but some even sell registered animals at a very low cost. The puppy printer also goes undetected by Facebook and other online bodies who scrutinise or limit advertising or block accounts, they mostly go undetected and unchecked by the SPCA, which means they can advertise their litters freely and keep their dogs in sub-standard conditions without too much issues. This breeding strategy fills the market with litter after litter of genetically identical (usually) lower quality puppies that are contributing very little to the genetic diversity or health of the breed as a whole at a give-away price. Unfortunately the world is full of individuals like these who like to call themselves 'breeders' but in actual fact they are effectively cutting the throats of the individuals that are passionate about improving the breed by severely undercutting on price and delivering a bad name to the breed through selling poor quality and negatively impacting the breed diversity.

A TRUE BREEDER is an individual who has a number of breeding dogs that all have distinct differences and are kept for different purposes and to fulfil different roles within their breeding plan. They have many dogs and don't repeat a mating unless there is a very good reason. A breeder knows the strengths and weaknesses of each of his dogs and mates them with a specific goal or outcome in mind. Every mating done is done after thoughtful planning and with calculations of the coefficients of inbreeding, genotype and phenotype that will be produced in mind. They try to preserve genetic diversity, they test the breeding dogs they own for different health issues to ensure quality, longevity and sustainability of the breed. A true breeder will also sell adult dogs that can be replaced by their progeny because they have managed to produce something that is superior in quality to that of the parents. The veterinary care, feeding and housing costs of the adult dogs they keep as well as potential breeding dogs that may not even make the cut to breed at the age of breeding has to be carried from the pet sales income. The price of the puppy will definitely be more than the price of a puppy from a puppy printer and with good reason. These individuals often struggle to advertise effectively because of the algorithms that govern online advertising that shut down high volumes of  traffic in animal sales. They need to pay more to effectively advertise their animals on private platforms that are not always as effective as social media. They also get more attention from the SPCA and welfare workers to keep their practices in check and their standards high. All of which costs more money. So please keep this in mind when you select a breeder.

Pet quality puppies usually sell for a minimum of ZAR4500 each to homes within SOUTH AFRICA without any breeding rights and registered as PET ONLY. (Puppies that are considered PET QUALITY can not be EXPORTED LEGALLY)

Black PET puppies start at ZAR10 000 each. 

Breeding quality puppies range from ZAR 6000 to ZAR 50 000 for local sales - Depending on the individual quality of the puppy. Export puppies carry a premium to cover the costs associated with health tests and special quarantine and vaccination requirements as well as shipping related costs that are specific to the country of importation. Regardless of the sex or age of the dog, each dog is valued on the  grounds of its own merit as a breeding dog or as a PET at the time of sale. 

Retiring breeding females are available once they've had a litter with us. (Usually around 3years old) We do not breed the same genetics over and over to clone the same faults like printers do. We are interested in the betterment of our genetic material over many generations of breeding to arrive at a genetically better endpoint as the dogs we started from. For this reason we constantly keep refreshing our breeding stock. 

The price range for adult breeding females range from ZAR 8000 to ZAR 100 000 each for local sales. Export will carry a premium as mentioned above.

Breeding males are also available when retiring from service. (Usually 4years old and older) 

Price range on breeding males are ZAR 8000 to ZAR 200 000 each.

Disclosing whether you'd like to breed or just like a pet for your family is very important during the sales process. The better quality puppies that will have a better chance of making the very stringent quality check (*Appraisal - see FAQ) cost more money. This is to ensure they have the best chance to get sold to people who are serious about breeding and to give the best possible genetics the chance to end up with a breeder and reproduce. 

Puppies sold as watch dogs of pets are cheaper and sell to homes where the goal is not to breed - they are registered as PETS WITHOUT BREEDING RIGHTS because they should not reproduce.

Pictures used to advertise puppies can be taken once the puppies are around 6 weeks old and very mobile. Studying their movement gives a good indication of their quality at such an early age. Prices and breeding animals cannot be determined effectively before 6 weeks of age. Once the puppies are 6 weeks old and pictures have been taken, their pictures with a PRICE attached to each picture will be posted to my WhatsApp status and from there onto our social media pages. 

Sales are done by completing and signing a sales contract and making full payment for the puppy before it leaves our premises.

*Are your dogs registered?

- In South Africa Boerboels can only be registered with SABBS. If your dog is registered anywhere else it is considered a counterfeit according to South African law. The registration of Boerboels is governed by the Animal Improvement Act (No. 62 of 1998 providing for the breeding, identification and utilisation of genetically superior animals in the interest of the South African Republic and to provide for all matters connected therewith)

Selling and buying as well as breeding of Boerboels in South Africa are governed by this law. This means that any breeder of Boerboels must be registered with SABBS in South Africa. If a breeder cannot provide a SABBS breeder number for you to verify for validity at the office the dogs you are buying are counterfeit and both buyer and seller are punishable by law. (Fines and imprisonment of up to a year) This also means that all registered SABBS breeders are not allowed to sell any UNREGISTERED puppies. 

For a Boerboel to be registered with SABBS it must pass a very stringent quality check. This quality check is called an APPRAISAL. Puppies that are bred from registered parents with SABBS pedigrees only receive a birth notification document, which can be converted to a REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE for breeding purposes only after achieving the minimum requirement at an APPRAISAL. Appraisals can be done from 12 months of age but is recommended to be done from 18 months of age when the dog is more mature.
